CITY PRESIDENT REPLIES

D’Ottavi said he was concerned how some aspects Pezos’ trial were handled by Adelaide United but did not want to engage in a public slanging match.
City agreed on July 9 to release Pezos for United’s opening Pre-Season Cup clash against Melbourne last Sunday but required him to play the local fixture against Adelaide Galaxy on the Saturday, while making him available for last night’s match against Perth at Hindmarsh Stadium.
On July 10 City verbally agreed to release Pezos on the Saturday to travel to Tasmania.
While D’Ottavi said he understood it may have been too late to change plans for Tasmania he was perplexed why United chose not to play Pezos last night.
``He’s worked hard, he’s fitter than he’s ever been. He’s been good for Adelaide City an I think Adelaide City has been good for him,’’ D’Ottavi said.

``City certainly doesn’t feel inferior to anybody but at the same time we recognise the A-League is the top league.
``If players can achieve the goal of getting to the higher level through Adelaide City that is fine because it means we’re doing the right thing.
``It means young kids will want to come and play for Adelaide City.’’
D’Ottavi said he hoped an overhaul of the trial and transfer system would be implemented so all parties knew exactly where they stood.
As part of the overhaul, injury compensation policies for players asked to trial with A-League clubs and a transfer fee structure which took into account player performances in the A-League would be established.
``Every club deserves the right to protect its assets,’’ he said. ``At the moment that is not in place, we tried to put it in place and maybe this can be the catalyst for a more formal arrangement to be drawn up. Money needs to come back from the A-League to the locals clubs so it can be re-invested back into player development.’’
