40 Years Since Adelaide City’s First National Championship

19 October 1986 remains one of the defining dates in Adelaide City Football Club history.

Forty years ago today, Adelaide City reached the summit of Australian football for the first time, securing the Club’s maiden National Soccer League Championship.

After suffering a one-goal defeat to Sydney Olympic in the opening leg of the Grand Final, City responded with a memorable 3–1 victory in New South Wales to claim the national title.

Led by Zoran Matić, the championship-winning side featured established City figures alongside a generation of young players who would go on to leave a significant mark on Australian football, including Alex Tobin, Aurelio Vidmar, Steve Maxwell and Joe Mullen.

The 1986 triumph was more than just the Club’s first national championship. It established Adelaide City as a genuine force on the national stage and laid the foundations for further NSL Championships in 1992 and 1994.

Four decades later, that history remains an important part of Adelaide City’s identity.

And fittingly, in the Club’s 80th year, Adelaide City is once again competing nationally through the 2026 Australian Championship.

Forty years on from 1986. Back on the National Stage.
