City close gap on Sturt with Cove catch-up win

Adelaide City has moved within three points of ladder leaders Sturt Lions after a solid 3-1 away win against Cove FC on Monday night.

On short rest, City showed no signs of fatigue, scoring three first-half goals to register a comfortable victory and extend their incredible unbeaten streak to 17 matches in the Apex Women’s State League.

Familiar goal-scorers Millie Scott and Natalie Frantzis both struck inside the opening half hour before Merveille Ipassou put the contest beyond doubt just before the break.

Paul Morris’ side began brightly with Scott slotting an inevitable goal, her 16th of the campaign.

Frantzis, another regular on the scoresheet, followed suit in the 27th minute to bring up her 10th of the season.

With a 2-0 scoreline always precarious, Ipassou effectively made sure of the points on 43 minutes.

The hosts replied in the 88th minute but it was nothing more than a consolation as City strolled to its 14th triumph of the season.

Frustrating not to keep a clean sheet, City will equally be hoping that concession does not come back to haunt them with the title on track to be decided by goal difference.

The crucial victory means the Black and whites (45 points) are now just three points behind Sturt (48 points) with a game in hand, while still trailing on goal difference by five (+46 to +41).
