City secure comeback win over Western Strikers, keep pace with Sturt

Two goals in two minutes have seen Adelaide City overcome a plucky Western Strikers outfit 2-1 in Round 19 of the Apex Steel Women’s State League at Adelaide City Park on Friday night.

Second half goals in quick succession from Millie Scott and Nakita Pereira scored cancelled out Strikers’ first-half lead to continue the pressure on leaders Sturt Lions.

Head Coach Paul Morris named an unchanged starting line-up for the contest following their resounding 5-0 win over Modbury Jets last weekend.

City’s phenomenal unbeaten run appeared to be in jeopardy, trailing 1-0 at the interval thanks to Vanja Todorovic scoring on 44 minutes for the visitors.

However, the Black and Whites refused to be flustered and found a way back through Scott and Pereira immediately in the 64th and 65th minutes respectively.

Both players also found the net in their most recent outing against Modbury with Scott taking her tally to 15 for the campaign, while Pereira bagged her eighth and has scored in each of her previous three matches.

The Zebras ultimately held on and now extend their streak to 16 league matches without a loss.

City’s triumph sees them remain six points off Sturt after their 9-0 win over the Jets as the Lions also boast a superior goal difference of +46 compared to +39.

Morris’ side must now recover quickly and prepare for their catch-up game away against Cove FC on Monday night.
