Five-star City down Jets 5-0 to keep pressure on title race

The hunt for the Apex Women’s State League title appears set to go down to the wire with Adelaide City producing a sensational 5-0 win against Modbury Jets at Smith Partners Stadium on Saturday night.

The visitors raced to a two-goal lead inside the opening 13 minutes through Yasmina Kasumovic and Mille Scott. Goals either side of the interval – a second from Scott and Natalie Frantzis – made it four, while Nakita Pereira completed the rout late on.

From the outset City were determined to set the tone and the Jets resistance was broken two minutes in following a clinical Kasumovic finish.

It was the fourth successive match the forward had found the back-of-the-net.

Their intensity and sharpness on and off the ball was apparent, as they suffocated the Jets from garnering any ascendency.

Scott then doubled the advantage capitalising on a goalkeeping mistake.

The Black and Whites continued to dominate proceedings, targeting long balls in behind the Jets defence and they made it 3-0 via this tactic.

Scott effectively put the contest to bed before the break, latching onto a long pass and clinically dispatched her unerring strike into the top corner for her brace and 14th goal of the season.

The second half picked up where the first stanza ended with Frantzis adding a fourth in the 52nd minute with a strong shot from the edge of the box.

Pereira then etched her name on the scoresheet for a second consecutive week, showing great persistence before firing her attempt beyond the goalkeeper on 77 minutes.

City remain in second place, six points adrift of Sturt Lions, who thrashed Elizabeth Grove 8-0 on Sunday, though do have two games in hand.

Paul Morris’ side host Western Strikers this Friday night in their next match at Adelaide City Park.
