Three-time champions to attend Adelaide City’s 80th Gala

Adelaide City Football Club is proud to confirm that members of the Club’s most successful era, players who were part of all three National Soccer League Championship-winning squads, will be in attendance at the 80th Anniversary Gala.

Across the Club’s title-winning teams in 1986, 1992 and 1994, five players were part of all three squads: Alex Tobin, Sergio Melta, Paul Shillabeer, Steve Maxwell and Joe Mullen. It is a rare group whose consistency and contribution underpinned Adelaide City’s sustained success at a national level.

Of that group, Joe Mullen, Sergio Melta and Paul Shillabeer will be in attendance on the night.

Joe Mullen was an attacking presence across all three championship teams, combining creativity and goal threat. From the 1986 breakthrough through to the early 1990s titles, he remained a constant influence in the final third and a key contributor in big moments.

Sergio Melta, one of the Club’s great servants, built a reputation for consistency and durability across an extraordinary number of national league appearances. A mainstay in midfield, his work rate and reliability made him central to each of the three title-winning sides.

Paul Shillabeer, a home-grown defender, was part of the 1986 championship team and continued as a core member of the squad through the 1992 and 1994 successes. Known for his composure and defensive strength, he represents the strength of Adelaide City’s development and long-term continuity.

To contribute across three title-winning squads across different eras reflects quality, resilience and an ability to perform at the highest level over time. These players were present across the full arc of Adelaide City’s most successful period, from the breakthrough in 1986 through to the Club’s continued success in the early 1990s.

Their presence at the 80th Anniversary Gala offers a rare opportunity to connect with players who helped define an era and deliver sustained success for Adelaide City on the national stage.
