NPL Round 19 Preview: Adelaide City v WT Birkalla

A top-of-the-table clash awaits third-place Adelaide City on Saturday when it hosts RAA National Premier League leaders West Torrens Birkalla.

A chance for top spot is on the line for the Black and Whites, eager to make amends for squandering a two-goal advantage in its 2-2 draw against Croydon FC last time out. They will also be without the suspended Nicholas Francese following a red card.

City, with 36 points, trail Birkalla by two points and know a triumph will send them top of the standings, if second-place MetroStars (37 points) fail to defeat West Adelaide.

That 2-2 stalemate against the Kings snapped a three-game winning streak for Vas Parhas’ side, but they do come into the clash unbeaten in 11.

Birkalla by its standards have been inconsistent of late with its form over the past five games yielding three victories and two losses, and last recorded back-to-back wins in mid-June.

However, last weekend they registered the biggest win of the 2026 season, trouncing a hapless Para Hills side 11-0.

In the reverse fixture from May, Birkalla prevailed 1-0 in what was a cagey affair.

Another tight contest is expected when the two teams cross paths at Adelaide City Park as the best defence in City will have to find a way to thwart the competition’s second-most prolific attack led by striker George Blackwood.

The former Adelaide United man leads the golden boot race with 19 goals, seven ahead of his closest rival and his influence will need to be contained by the likes of experienced defender and former Reds teammate Yared Abetew.

With four league matches to go and the race for the premiership heating up it is a match you will not want to miss.

Earlier in the day, the Under 18s kick off at 10:00am, followed by the Reserves at 12:15pm, before the Senior Men take centre stage at 2:30pm.
