NPL Round 20 Preview: Campbelltown City v Adelaide City

The hunter is now the hunted with Adelaide City aiming to maintain first place for the remainder of the RAA National Premier League season.

Vas Parhas’ men climbed to the summit of the table last weekend following a resolute 1-0 win over ladder leaders West Torrens Birkalla, while second-place MetroStars suffered a 3-1 loss to West Adelaide.

Three matches are left of the regular season for the Black and Whites, starting with a tricky test on Friday night away to Campbelltown City.

City (39 points) currently hold a one-point lead over Birkalla and are two clear of MetroStars and know destiny is now in their hands – win every remaining fixture and they will be crowned Premiers for the first time since 2022.

The Zebras enter the clash unbeaten in 12 games while possessing the competition’s best defensive record.

Despite the Red Devils occupying ninth spot, the side on their day can pose a number of threats which the visitors will need to be wary of.

The pair’s previous encounter at Oakden proved this notion with the Zebras needing a last gasp 97th minute winner from Francesco Schimizzi to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory.

Another close affair is expected with Campbelltown also looking to keep alive its finals hopes, albeit slim chance of a top six berth. They currently trail sixth-placed Croydon FC by six points and will need to collect maximum points from their remaining matches and rely on other results falling their way.

Campbelltown have not experienced a loss in its previous four outings but have drawn in three of those contests.

Can City move one step closer to the minor premiership in the club’s 80th-year anniversary or will the Red Devils spoil the party against their rivals.

Friday night at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre promises to be a cracker.

The Under 18s and Reserves will then continue the round on Saturday, with kick-off at 10:30am and 12:45pm respectively.
