Our Invitation

An invitation. This is where it all began.

An invitation to play a sport you love. To a safe space. To a slice of home a world away.

This is the origin story of club football in Australia. 80 years ago, a spark was lit for the burgeoning Italian community in Adelaide.

Adelaide Juventus was formed; success followed on the pitch with silverware and off the pitch with a growing community that stopped purely surviving and began thriving in their new homes.

When you begin thriving, opportunities arise. Another invitation to something bigger, something better. Italian, Greeks, Croatians, Serbians- you name it: different contexts, similar experiences.

Those social clubs, originally founded as a safe haven for sports and leisure, grew to the point where they could sustain a national competition.

The source of survival became a point of pride: the slur “wog,” a badge of honour.

The NSL began in 1978. Adelaide Juventus, by this point Adelaide City, was there from the start but had to bide its time.

Bittersweet moments of seeing other marginalised communities, Jewish clubs, Greek clubs, other Italian clubs, and even the cross-town neighbours get their moment in the national spotlight while the Black and White continued to build.

Then 1986 came around. The wait was over. An institution created for survival became a force, crowned as Champions of Australia.

An invitation to celebrate. To continue dreaming. To reach further peaks. 1992 and 1994. National championships. A dynasty.

The influence of that original invitation can still be felt today from the players who came to Adelaide City as boys, left as Champions, and continue impacting football decades later as men. Veart, Mori, Mullen, Melta, the Vidmars. The list goes on.

Hospitality is part of our culture, our identity. The invitation is always extended.

What happens when it is not reciprocated?

The A-League’s launch saw new clubs take off. Clubs like Adelaide City, South Melbourne, Marconi Stallions, and Sydney Olympic became an afterthought in the NSL’s demise.

In our culture, service does not stop because of inconvenience.

Demoralised but not defeated, the work continued. Returning loyalty to a loyal community, providing opportunities in sports and leisure on and off the field, because the national stage was and always will be a byproduct of that work, not a final destination.

After a decade of continual service, an invitation was once again extended.

The first version of the FFA Cup (today called the Australia Cup).

In 2014, Adelaide City earned the right to dream again. The right to return where it belongs. The right to prove it belongs against A-League Grand Finalists Western Sydney Wanderers.

90 minutes of excellence from players unknown to the national scene. Unknown no longer. Thomas Love delivers a moment of brilliance. A journey deep into the national stage after years away followed.

An invitation to reminisce. An invitation to dream again.

12 years after that magical night at Marden, another opportunity arises.

The Australian Championship is an invitation earned.

80 years after its inception, through mountainous highs and treacherous lows, Adelaide City returns where it historically belongs.

An invitation for ambition, for reconnection.

An invitation for Adelaide City juniors to dream. Juniors like Oliver Western, who walked out holding Matt Halliday's hand in the 2013 Federation Cup Final, 13 years before he was judged the best player on the field in his own winning Grand Final in 2026. 13 years before he would go on to represent his boyhood team on its return to the national stage.

This is an invitation to fans who have been with us every game, despite the absence of the national stage. An invitation to fans who gravitated to the A-League and to fans who shifted their interest to football overseas.

To players with ambitions that mirror this club’s 80-year pursuit of excellence. To members and volunteers who want to showcase that the club they love is not just surviving, but thriving.

It is an invitation to engage with the club beyond a viral moment of excellence, beyond a social media feature on its canteen.

An invitation to dream again and a chance to dare to turn those dreams into reality.

We extend the invitation because that is who we are.

To more than 90 minutes of football. To 80 years of pride, excellence, and success.

This is our invitation to you on the first page of the next 80 years.

We hope you can join us.

The invitation is yours.
