Adelaide City secured a resilient 2-1 win over fierce rivals West Adelaide in the ‘Adelaide Derby’ in Round 12 of the RAA National Premier League on Sunday evening.
The result sees City snap a two-game winless streak, while extending their unbeaten run to four matches to keep pace with the top of the table.
The first encounter between the two sides in more than three years got off to a blistering start when Yuki Kitano opened the scoring inside 38 seconds.
A long switch picked out Asad Kasumovic on the right and he flashed a dangerous cross to the back post which was easily finished by the striker for his eighth goal of the campaign in all competitions.
Daniel Bressan had a great chance to make it 2-0 but his volley from Domenic Costanzo’s cutback was brilliantly saved by the outstretched foot of Jackson O’Donnell.
The Black and Whites rode their luck at times with Hellas striking the woodwork on a couple of occasions.
And the pressure would finally reap the rewards.
In the second stanza, the hosts eventually scored an equaliser through Maksim Ivanic’s free header on 51 minutes.
However, parity was only fleeting with Vas Parhas’ men responding six minutes later courtesy of an unlikely source.
Bressan sent a high ball into the area which Kitano challenged, and it bounce kindly for left-back Oliver Western to drive his effort across the ‘keeper and into the back of the net.
City were unable to add to their lead, but it proved insignificant as they held on for a third successive victory over their bitter foes.
